Heraclitus of Ephesus was a pre-Socratic philosopher who insisted that change was a fundemental element of the universe. The teachings of Heraclitus were stored in vaults hidden under the Temple of Artemis. When you visit the Temple of Artemis today, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and a UNESCO World Heritage site, you will not see much more than a thriving swamp and a single column- atop which a stork is nesting with her young family. The Greeks built the Temple on a swamp in an effort to prevent its collapse in a giant earthquake, provided the swamp would sway with the large temple. Unfortuantly, the temple did collapse into the swamp, and Heraclitus became ever more obscure. However, it is said that Heraclitus was the most influencial pre-Socratic philosopher for Plato and Socrates.
